The National Gallery of London is implementing a civic group to advise on the museum’s policies and directions. The new parliament will be composed of publics from all over the UK.
Next month, 15,000 households in the UK will receive invitations to attend. A civil lottery process will then select 50 people, and the group will then put down again to 20 people, who will sit on the civic group for the next five years.
New plan, called NG citizen,,,,, The aim is to enhance the capacity of potential visitors and democratize the museum by allowing ordinary citizens to participate in part of the museum’s decision-making process. The organization also aims to reflect diversity in the UK.
“The gallery aims to shape its plans and priorities around the needs and aspirations of the British community,” the National Gallery explained in a statement.
While the new convention is not expected to directly affect the choice of artwork or exhibitions viewed by the institution, it will be responsible for making recommendations on the purposes, priorities and public values of the gallery. The agency has proposed the conference to deepen relations with domestic audiences.
NG citizens will be involved in a UK-based public participation charity with over 20 years of experience in public participation projects.
Some European institutions have adopted this model to enhance local public participation, including the Federal Gallery in Bonn and the Dresden State art collection in Germany, the city of Versailles in France, and the Art Exchange in Nottingham and the Birmingham Museum Trust in the UK.
