I want to keep the technology and do the administrative work. What should I do to keep me technical rather than managed?
What is success?
I’m Jeff Altman, a big hunter. I mentor people and organizations. I am a professional coach and a leadership coach. . . You know, I work with people, succeed, transition to their new roles and are very successful.
Someone wrote to me and asked this question in more detail than the introduction. So, let me give it to you. “Is IT people continuing to raise their wages or total compensation packages in their 50s?” As they write, “It seems to be an unwritten rule, those in the 50s and 60s are too old to write code or too expensive to write code, so they need to go into management, or maybe strategic building design positions, or become road fighters who write code as a hired gun.”
This guy would rather not do a hundred percent of road fighters like the Big Four consulting firms, so what they like to do, they say, it’s better not to participate in the abstract world of design and strategy because he’s quite specific and likes to deal with specific issues and likes to solve them personally and doesn’t like managers because he doesn’t like administrators because he doesn’t like managers. So he wanted to know what he could do.
Now, we don’t know what this man does to make a living, except they work in it. ah! I see that they are data architects!
Now. I don’t know what their salary is, but I do know that the company hires a data architect! They hire data professionals and you don’t necessarily need to be well compensated in management. Now, again, we don’t know how much money this guy is making at the moment, but looking at their pictures, because I stared at them, on LinkedIn, he presented himself as a young 50 year old. . . Unless this is an old photo.
My first reaction was that in each person’s geographical area, there are some larger organizations willing to pay more for talent, so larger organizations tend to play roles like principals, or have other unique titles for organizations that aren’t necessarily related to managers or resources.
Now, another option is to think about consulting, but not the way that person thinks about it. They are considering the role of road fighters, and they talk about a hundred percent of travel. I know who does this kind of work. . . It is 80%. . . But that doesn’t matter. He doesn’t want to travel. However, there are multiple organizations working with companies that may consider working for themselves and allowing themselves to transition to a supertech role.
Now, although they won’t be involved in management, the problem is still arguably very technical. Ultimately, there is a point unless they can find something to let go. The same is true in the industry. =, but the consulting firm provides representatives for this. So, I want to admit it. In the industry, in large enterprises, when the economy is in recession, guess who is lying down? All these big MS claims to be stable?
So, there is no guarantee, but you consult in the local market and talk to the company about not being a road fighter, instead of going to a large national or international company and talking to them, he talks to the local company about working in your market. Within a reasonable distance, you have a shot.
But I also want to consider that you claim to be a pretty expensive person and the higher you get the money you get, the more you can get out of the company, become an independent consultant and work privately. But this will involve marketing and sales, promoting oneself or working through certain contract agencies.
Therefore, there is no simple answer. There are no simple solutions, they all have disadvantages. Therefore, I will not draw flowers and roses, beautiful pictures of music. These are the tough choices you have to make, whatever you choose is great, but explore some different options.
So I hope you help with this and I will just say if you are interested in my coach, please contact me via LinkedIn. So my LinkedIn address is www.linkedin.com /in /thebiggamehunter.
