Lawrence Meju’s Vibrant Paper Collage Explore Everyday Life and Human Psychology – Huge

“I often see my work as a quiet form of world building, and in many ways, I see it as a visual journal,” said Lawrence Meju, whose unique and vibrant collages are in surrealism, everyday experiences and memories.
The Lagos-based artist remembers working with paper collages in his earliest school art production introduction, but it wasn’t until 2020, when restrictions were obtained for shops and materials during the pandemic, which some wit transformed into a new way of working.
“I found that these interesting essays were abandoned,” Mei Mao told The Giant. He wasn’t necessarily the material he would choose bats, but he was motivated to do something-do anything at that time. The challenge paid off. “I quickly portray myself inclined to abstraction, which is what my work is called” External portrait. “Recently, his composition has become increasingly complex and smooth, one-sized and symbolic objects (such as bells, cut flowers and plants).
Meju’s work boldly explores the connection between daily life, human relationships and perceptions. “I am currently involved in the theme of dispersion, reinvention and identity,” he said. “This involvement is also an ode to the process of creating these collages.” By simplifying human forms and other objects into layers, textures, colorful shapes, he delves into countless memories, history, identity and emotions, overlapping and telling who we are.
“The power of guidance at my work is my commitment to keeping the child inside active and the motivation to create what I want to see in the world,” Meju said. “At first it was uncomfortable to carve a path outside the mainstream, but tending toward this discomfort allowed me to develop a way that was real to me.”
Meju is currently planning some sculptures and objects to repeat the visual language of its two-dimensional works. If you are in London in October, find the artist’s work on 1-54 Art Fair displayed by Soto Gallery and see more on his Instagram.
