Here, I answered questions from the people the recruiter asked for reference in the first interview and did not want to provide them.
7 Important Tips to Help and Manage Remote Employees
I’m Jeff Altman, the big game hunter, head coach of Jobs search. I was asked a question I thought was great, that is, during the first interview, the recruiter asked me to refer to it. I really don’t want to give it to them. So, how should I say no to the recruiter when it asks for reference in an interview? Now, I want to be. . . To distinguish and say, I want to start answering questions about emergency recruiters because that is definitely a place to refuse.
(0:37 – 0:58)
They may tell you that we need to check the reference on behalf of the client. It’s a great route, but what they’re really doing is trying to use your contacts to recruit others. I know this because I’ve been listening to sales coaches for years and talking about this being a kind talent and you don’t want to be a co-conspirator.
(0:59 – 1:52)
So the right way to respond or the easiest way to respond is that you smile and say when the time is right, but not now. And, if they say, well, we need to have it because the client wants us to check the references when submitting. Again, I think it clear that I’m not talking about the search company that’s reserved.
I’m not talking about C-level professionals. I’m talking about it, you know that you’re typical average Jane Jane or Joe at work, is hiring people close. And, you know, we need a reference.
The customer wants it. Great. I’d love to provide it to clients.
Well, they want us to check the references. Not yet. Then we can’t submit you.
OK And leave it there. Do you know why? Because if they can bring you to the door, they will let you in.
(1:53 – 3:41)
They can’t. What they were trying to do was to type a contact in two or three, they called them and tried to recruit them, ostensibly under the guise of checking references. So, they might say, we need a former manager.
Then they go from there to your manager and then do a reference check and try to flip it to recruit business from them. Or they might try to talk to your peers about you and your job and say, this is the position I’m trying to recruit. Will this probably interest you? There are many small gams among third-party recruiters.
Now, I know some people will answer, would you do it with a company? No! Unfortunately, too many third-party recruiters are mean. We already know. So the idea is to push them away because you don’t know if you can trust them and blink, blink, most of it, you probably can’t.
There are exceptions, but most of them, you may not. And, you know, it’s like a first date with someone. Have you mentioned your ex-husband or wife? I want to talk to them.
Or someone you’ve been out with before. I want to know what you look like by talking to them. No, not the first date, especially with an absolute stranger.
Obviously, you will never do this in a date situation. You get it. Here, very politely, with a smile on the face, and in due time, you know, we will do that, but the customer wants it.
It doesn’t matter. If you can’t live without that, then, obviously, you don’t think I’m suitable. So we just leave it there and keep moving forward.
I hope you have a wonderful day and take care of yourself!
