Dozens of Best Mattress Sets We’ve Tested (2025): Support, Plush, Memory Foam

Honorary mention
Not everything we tested was available as an option, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad mattress cover. This is some of our testers sleeping and still have a good night’s sleep, but not as love as the choice above.
Avocado Alpaca Alpaca horn cover, priced at $809: If you are looking for an extra soft mattress trim, wired reviewer Scott Gilbertson recommends avocado alpaca mattress. He said it was one of the softest things he had ever slept, like sleeping in fluffy cocoons. Although it is only 2 inches thick, it still has the feeling of a comfortable sunken mattress. There are two options: medium or plush, with organic wool for the first time and the second using what avocado calls “baby alpaca” fiber. Fortunately, this refers to its softness, not the age of the alpaca itself. It’s definitely a luxury purchase, but you want something super soft.
Avocado Eco Organic Mattress, priced at $296: Here is another good organic mattress cover made of latex foam. Thanks to latex, it has a nice elastic feel, rather than the sunken feeling you get from memory foam. It’s softer than our main organic choices, which may be your preference.
Brooklyn Bedding 3-inch Latex Mattress for $509: The trim of this latex mattress is very good, the spring is beautiful, and it is soft and not soft. But the avocado economy is more comfortable, with prices nearly half the price.
Spiral Double Comfort Mattress Cover, priced at $374: If you and your partner have different sleep surface needs (especially one likes a firm surface and another wants a softer surface – Helix has attached the mattress to the mattress. The sides of the Helix double comfortable top are softer and firmer, so everyone can make their ideal mattress feel without splurge on the King’s bed without splurge. The soft side uses a copper gel-infused memory foam that promises a “luxury plush” feel with a soft sinking feel, while the firm side uses high density foam that keeps my post-cyst husband’s spine well and straightforward. Plus, its cooling cover wraps it into a cohesive top.
Helix Premium Memory Foam Mattress with Glacier for $374: This memory foam top hat doesn’t have as much sinking feeling as the company store or Tempur-Pedic Toppers, for better or worse – my hips feel a little lower than the rest of my body, and I noticed more movement transfers than the aforementioned foam. However, if you don’t want that super sinking feeling, this spiral top is a great option. Due to the hypoallergenic glacier cover, there is no heat resistance and a convenient belt is attached to every corner of the mattress. Helix also comes with a trial period and a limited lifetime warranty, so you can try it out, unlike Tempur-Pedic, there is no return policy. –Kat Merck
Nest Soft Soft Latex Topper, priced at $599: Nest’s latex-based finish looks and feels like an incredibly soft pillow top. It’s one of the softest top hats I’ve ever tried, it has a memory foam feel that can sink to the top, but the spring and pillow feel more. However, it is one of the most expensive products we have tested, and it is not very big and does not provide the greatest support.
Topper for Nolah Mattress, priced at $314: If you are looking for this new bed, Nolah’s top hat will add fresh semi-intensive foam from the organic cotton cover to the top of any mattress. It’s just 2 inches thick, and the company version softens the bed of wired reviewer Martin Cizmar, providing some stress relief and a plush new bed feel.
Luxurious natural latex mattress for $301: If you like something solid but want a thicker option than 2 inches, Scott recommends a Plushbed top hat. It has five solid levels and he is a big fan of super company choice. This is also a nice range if you want to choose a very specific firmness, as most other top-tiers can only offer one or two options.
Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt Mattress Topper, priced at $359: According to Wired commenter Kat Merck, our resident memory foam fan and critic, this is a top-notch memory foam top that softens overly fixed mattresses and does a great job of preventing movement transfers. It doesn’t have the iteration of her favorite tempur-pedic memory bubble, but it still works well. It also has a washable lid that can be pulled apart, while the Corner belt holds the sleeve securely in place, plus a 10-year warranty (but no trial or return).
tempur-pedic tempur-cloud Topper, priced at $179: I like a soft bed. Actually, if you asked me before trying tempur-cloud Topper, is it possible to have a bed also Soft, I said no. But I changed my mind. There is actually a mattress tutor Maybe too soft. I’m a stomach sleeper and this memory foam is so plush and deep that during my testing week, I find myself almost having to grab my body if I need to move at any time during the night. It also has a tendency to sleep in hot sleep, and because the user sinks so deeply, it is possible that the neck pain with a pillow can be painful when sleeping. But beyond that, the Tempur-Cloud Topper is basically the last word for a soft bed fan who wants to completely eliminate the traces of motion transfer and any hard mattresses. – Kat Merck
Turmerry latex mattress, priced at $206: If you want something organic on your budget, this 2-inch latex top hat is a good price, and our favorite organic top hat is the budget. You have to buy the cover separately, but you don’t need it if you want to save money. Turmerry uses a five-zone design that makes the top-level stronger in some areas (such as your head) and softer in others (such as your shoulders).
We’ll skip
Leesa Mattress Topper costs $224: The top of this mattress does not have a good structure. We found it was placed untidy on the bed, with strange spots on the edges and was too soft.
Brooklyn bedding 4 lbs. Memory foam top hat, priced at $290: Neither my husband nor husband could have a good sleep when the top hat on this mattress was placed on our bed. It doesn’t have the same benefits as other memory foam tops we’ve tested.
FAQ
What is a mattress cover?
The mattress cover is a piece of support material – options include memory foam, latex foam, cotton and even coils – you add it to the top of the mattress to change the feel without changing the entire mattress. This is a great option to soften a mattress that is too strong, or add some targeted support to a good mattress. Some top hats can also make the mattress stronger, such as our favorite organic top hat.
How do you know if you need a mattress cover?
This is a great thing if you need a surface replacement without changing the entire mattress. The mattress cover won’t fix an old or unsupported mattress (check out our guide to the best mattresses to fix this!), but it can bring a good mattress and make it the perfect mattress with the right makeup.
I struggle with back pain and side sleepers, so I tend to have a soft pairing that is soft but not too soft to my shoulders. My editor Kat Merck’s mattress is too fixed and she likes to add memory foam top hats to achieve the ideal softness level. The top hat you want will depend on your sleep preferences and the changes you want in the mattress you already have. But many people can benefit from a good top hat.
What is the type of mattress?
wool: A set of wool mattresses is usually filled with wool hits or stuffing to think you fill something in a quilt or upholstered chair and wrapped in cotton. It’s soft, but not as soft as memory foam, nor as elastic as latex. Wool is a great temperature regulator, so it is a great choice for popular sleepers.
Top of the pillow: The pillow top mattress set is designed to have the fluffy feel of a pillow on the mattress. The inside of the top of the pillow may vary: some add a pillow top design to the foam layer, while others are just pillow bottom feathers between you and the mattress. Our favorite pillow top uses latex, but it still has a fluffy, slightly sunken feel to lie on the pillow.
emulsion: Latex is a manufacturing substance made of rubber trees. Compared to memory foam, the rubber base makes it bounce and spring nicely. Even if it is not marked as foam, latex trim often has foam-like sheets similar to memory foam. It is sometimes called artificial organic matter because its alkali is a natural substance, but it must be processed to become the latex you sleep in other products or use. Compared with memory foam, latex has less sinking rate and less retention.
Memory bubble: Memory foam is actually polyurethane (plastic polymer) foam that creates the memory foam itself by adding other compounds (the exact combination of compounds varies from company to company, and will vary from company to company). It is also known as “viscoelastic” polyurethane foam, or low-resistance polyurethane foam (LRPU). It is designed to fit your body, but then it returns to its original shape. The “memory” name comes from remembering its original shape. Memory foam tends to be one of the softest rowing clothes, and it has a lot of sinking (you might like, maybe hate) and tends to retain more heat. Some companies have added additional ingredients, such as cooling gel or graphite, to help with memory foam cooling.
Quiet bubble: Serene Foam is a newer trademark material created by Carpenter Co., the parent company of Casper Sleep. It is made from billions of amino foams, such as memory foam, but it also consists of microscopic air capsules. It is designed to address some of the shortcomings of traditional memory foam, including retaining heat and variable hardness levels while maintaining the same plush, stress relief feel. If you prefer a heating pad, please make a quick warning: Polyurethane tranquil foam is not recommended with heating equipment such as electric blankets or heating pads.
Hybrids: Mixed mattresses use multiple fillers you can find yourself. These combinations may vary. Our favorite Helix’s Hybrid Topper uses coils and foam, while Viscosoft’s Hybrid Topper uses a mixture of memory foam and soft fibers for a pillow-top feel. If you feel that a single type of top hat doesn’t suit your needs (whether it’s too soft or not soft enough), the hybrid option may be the best for you.
How thick should the top mattress be?
There are usually 2-inch or 3-inch height available mattresses, and even 4-inch heights. Inches may not necessarily indicate how good the top hat will be for your sleep needs, but if you know you want a super soft experience, you might want a thicker top for a softer feel.
