EP 1773, I’ve browsed a few things you need to take care of putting them together.
How to think about your resume
I thought I would do a show about resumes because frankly, I haven’t done it for a while and I won’t put things on the screen to show what a good resume looks like. I just want to point you something I think I need to pay attention to when building a resume in these times in these situations, unlike the Stone Age when I was hiring.
So the first point is that you always teach your name, address, and phone number at the top of your resume. . . At least an old friend. Even for many young people, millennials have received feedback. This has nothing to do with your current address. It’s about city, state and postal codes. I know our people tell you that you don’t have to include the postal code. That was a mistake. Frankly, if you want someone to get in touch with you, whether it’s a company or a recruiter, they go back to their database to find people within a specific geographic area.
For example, you live in San Francisco and someone comes into San Francisco, California. You miss all the areas around you, right? That’s because it doesn’t match San Francisco, California. They need a post code and a lot of content like articles I read on a website recently and didn’t even use the post code as a variable. But that’s the key way for the company to be in that position. You must get the postal code at the top of your resume.
Also, without too much on the design elements, you need a lot of blank spaces around you. Now, if you are in the art world, there may be a temptation to use a lot of graphic design formats, and if you submit it through the applicant tracking system, the system may kill some of the things you do because it’s hard to parse it into the correct fields. So, be aware that you can make your choice when you purchase a wide range of design elements to create visually appealing documents rather than documents that are useful to the system.
Why do I say “useful for the system?” Although I prefer you don’t submit your resume through the applicant tracking system, I want you to send them a hiring manager directly, the truth is that most people do it anyway. The problem boils down to if the keywords don’t match well and once you put it in the resume and parse it into the correct field, you won’t be interviewed. . . This will be on you because you choose to make them a beautiful resume with all kinds of colors and interesting fonts and visual appeal, so you think it doesn’t work with the system. Instead, many of these systems are like beautiful traditional fonts and lots of blank spaces. Therefore, be aware of this when building your resume.
Also, I would like to mention that the frequency of the use of terms is important. So consider the fact that there is a language specifically used in the job description that the system may not recognize other variables unless your resume matches it. So, please understand that it may be looking for people with a specific academic background and specific skills who have previously worked in a specific type of work. This is the software. This is not human. Although we’ve heard of AI, they’re not that good yet. Eventually, they will get there and the data dictionary will be established. But, at the same time, they are stupid.
Since the often popular black holes are scanning and deciding on many resumes, think about it from a systematic perspective. What is through the system? The answer comes down to wording in the resume, while the wording in the job description must match, must be reused, and must be quite high with the introduction in the resume.
If the characters (if the language is used at the bottom of page 3), the system is recommended, frankly, you haven’t used them recently. So one little trick you can do is to add the equivalent of a cover letter at the beginning of your resume, saying, “I want you to see how my background matches the work.” So you have keywords in the left column, and how long you have recently done your work in the right column. In fact, this became the first page of the resume. So what you want to do is start with the background matching way, and then the resume is right behind. That’s an option. There are many variables.
You can use it to be the cover email of your resume, so it’s there. But if you submitted through the Applicant Tracking System, this is a nice little trick, we should say, fooling the system’s stupidity because it immediately gives you a match and then goes further on page 2, or the lower half of page 1, to illustrate how your background matches.
So, there are several ideas. In the past days, we have talked about customizing resumes for work. Now, we talk about “personalization.” It must be personalized for the audience. Same nonsense. New language.
Remember, if you flip your resume to someone like a burger in a fast food restaurant and expect different results, a broken table twice a day is OK. Most of the time it doesn’t work. You won’t be interviewed twice a day (as an example of a fracture) twice a day correctly. The rest of the time is wrong.
So, personalize your resume. Make it fit. It’s obviously suitable.
