The latest update for Windows 11 may be brick SSD, user reports

Word is circulating on the internet, and the latest Windows 11 updates may cause some potentially serious problems for SSD owners. More specifically, some users in Japan reported that their SSD was corrupted, making it impossible to read files or even install the drive correctly. The user also reported losing Smart featureswhich allows SSD to self-monitor and report problems.
The update in question is KB5063878, Microsoft Launch to the public August 12. This is a Windows Secure Boot Update that resets the certification of devices set to expire in June 2026. There doesn’t seem to be any device that might attract attention about the update, but some scattered user reports indicate a difference.
Mashable cannot independently verify these reports, so at this point we classify this news as a rumor.
According to WCCFTECH (and discovered by technical radar), users began reporting the issue on social media a few days after the update.
What they report is: Users write large amounts of data to the drive. Once completed, the drive disappears from the operating system and is completely inaccessible to the user. After restarting, Windows cannot read the partition and the smart features of the drive become inaccessible. According to Japanese PC enthusiasts necoru_catsystem files are also likely to be corrupted.
Mixable light speed
To continue to cause problems, Necoru_cat says that on at least 60% of SSDs, writing is about 50GB, some of which cause more problems. Japanese Blog Nichepcgamer Already compiled A list of potentially problematic SSDs based on user tests, and a link to their reports. Users reported SSD drive issues from Corsair, Phison, Fikwot, Maxio, etc.

According to WCCFTECH, updates to Windows 11 can cause “wrong sequential writes”, resulting in the loss of the drive to the operating system.
Should I worry?
whether. There are many reports about the update causing SSD issues on X, but the vast majority of these users seem to be in Japan, which may indicate a region-specific issue. We were able to find some other reports People on Redditbut their location cannot be verified.
If the issue is easily triggered, we are sure there will be more reports as the update has been going on for six days. So this doesn’t seem to be a common problem and may not be encountered with everyday use. Having said that, we recommend that you use any big data with caution just in case.
If you want to avoid any potential risks, here are some tips to keep your drive safe:
-
Back up the data as soon as possible. The error seems to be hit randomly, so safe is better than regret.
-
If you do not have KB5063878 installed, please pause Windows updates. You can do this by turning on Windows Settings, navigating to Windows Update, and the option should be there. Once the next set of Windows is updated, please give up.
-
If KB5063878 is indeed installed, enable Windows Update. You need to get the fix as soon as possible.
If you have problems, collect as much data as possible and report it directly to Microsoft through the Feedback Center.
