In a legal filing last week, artist Mickalene Thomas faced charges that she cultivated a “abuse work environment” and brought undeserved money by her former romantic partner, Racquel Chevremont.

Chevremont and Thomas began a romantic relationship in 2011, and Thomas became a celebrity couple in the art world when he conducted the famous Brooklyn Museum survey the following year. Chevremont and Thomas said in the article that they said in a joint statement that they “end our long-term personal relationship but are still committed to completing our current project.” But in the subpoena, Chevremont claimed that their professional relationship remained tense after it was claimed.
“In addition to transferring funds and not properly compensated Ms. Chevrolet, Ms. Thomas also suffered from a hostile and abused work environment and ridiculed harassment,” the subpoena said. In addition, Thomas “repeated and improper pressure on Ms. Chevrolet to restore their romantic relationship and eventually terminate Ms. Chevrolet’s work,” the subpoena said. “The subpoena provided no specific details.
Chevrolet said in the subpoena that she was seeking $10 million from Thomas and her studio.
Representatives of Chevremont and Thomas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
