How to answer “Secret Illegal Question”

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

We all know that interviewers and employers are not allowed to raise certain questions legally. These are questions about age, questions that show bias towards women (i.e., “Oh my god, you’re a parent with little kids. Are you sure you can do this job?”). “How old are you?” along that line.

These are obviously illegal issues. However, there are secret illegal issues. These are what the interviewer thinks about, but never asks them in the form of questions. These are all questions of bias in one form or another.

Clear bias on age discrimination. How do you deal with it? How do you deal with “Oh, you’ve been out of work for so long? What’s wrong with you?” Technically, it’s not a legal issue. But, you know, this is the question in their minds, so why avoid it?

These are things you can be proactive and that’s my philosophy on this. You don’t wait for them to ask questions that may never come. You solve what you know, and this problem will exist in the storytelling process.

For example, regarding age discrimination, if I was looking for a job in my 60s and I interviewed my manager in my 30s, the first bias to recognize is that someone in the 60s could work for someone who might be 35 years old. The easiest way to solve such a problem is to say, “I’m responsible… (I’m responsible for your role) and 30 years from person to person, I’m 30 years away from my role, I’ve told me again 30 years, and I’ve got something great in me again.

One of the biases is whether you can report it to women; I don’t know why this is still in people’s minds, but sometimes it does. God knows that at least in the United States, women in the workforce are normal. I won’t solve this problem head-on. “I reported her control to someone responsible for such responsibilities…” Note how I used the gender term “she?” Or, you might say, “she was responsible…” It addressed it in a very subtle way, and you don’t say, “I reported to a woman…” You never want to telegraph obviously.

If you are African American or Latino, I know you will recognize this. Can this black woman eat with a bunch of white women, or can this Latino man be with a bunch of white men? You might talk about working with a diverse organization, whether your clients have a wide range of backgrounds or not having very diverse clients. You support or work with it and can solve the problem in this way.

Similarly, the way to deal with secret illegal issues suddenly by telling your career story, talking about working in an environment where you deal with this situation or deal with it and succeed, you start with this situation, you are the champion in this situation…

This is the easiest way to deal with it.
