Janet Echelman’s suspension network emanates for 25 years in “Aggressive Softness” – Huge

Janet Echelman (formerly) has been on five continents for twenty and a half years, and although her approach appears from an abnormal perspective, Janet Echelman (formerly) has established a party space. The artist is known for his huge network of suspended ceilings and outdoor structures that often cast colorful shadows or glowing light in the surrounding environment. The building installation sways with the wind, inviting viewers to pause and meditate on contact with each other.

Now, the artist’s works are collected in the title monograph Radical Softness: Janet Echelman’s Responsive Art. Published by Princeton Architectural Press and edited by Gloria Sutton, the evolution of Tome Chronicles echelman places her practice in the context of art history, engineering, climate activism and more. As this list suggests, her coverage is extensive, and each piece forms a larger system that is bound by all of us, whether it is politics, ecology or aesthetics.

“My art discovery power is through its elasticity and adaptability rather than brute force, because it allows the wind to pass through it rather than fight against it. I think it is a metaphor for how to live in these times,” Echelman said in the introduction.

This book contains sketches, diagrams and photographs of the recording process and final work, providing a broad understanding of the artist’s practice. It also contains interviews and papers from art historians, curators, engineers, thinkers and more, and entangles Echelman’s projects in a vast ecosystem.
