Photographer Emile Holba’s “Snow Leaves Town”

Photographer Emile Holba has conducted a series of documented seasonal transitions in the Arctic. Compared with lower latitude regions, the duration of the Arctic, especially spring, summer and autumn, is compressed in the duration of the Arctic compared to winter. Holba has worked for Ilulissat, Kalaallit Nunaat, Greenland, the town has adapted to the dark months of frozen temperatures and exemplified the ongoing urban Arctic life with only 4,000 residents. Holba is used to driving towns in winter, a lot of snow that masks key town infrastructure, and “when snow leaves town” reflects another transition:

“I had to adapt again – the spring awakening in town and the bright snow. As the seasons transitioned, the cityscape changed. The seasonal path of desire had thawed, the snowmobile trails melted into the softened tundra, the soft tundra melted, the debris parking lots were radiated, and I often went far away, and I was spread all over the place with 24 radiant vegetables. The fog, I experienced a profound privilege to witness its peaceful country.”
