Christy Lee Rogers

Christy Lee Rogers was born in Hawaii and was fascinated by water since childhood. “For me, water has always been chaos and freedom,” the artist said. “It deprived us of control and asked us to see ourselves in different ways. That’s where my story began.”

Rogers is known for his massive maximum photos taken underwater, hanging numbers in the rolling clothes. Using a series of lighting effects and vibrant fabrics to form a dramatic image, her style is evocative, with memories of Baroque or Rococo paintings and murals.

Hydra RenaissanceThe artist’s upcoming solo exhibition at Art Labor Gallery shows Rogers’ unique exploration of underwater photography over the past two decades. She uses the term “Renance” as a period of revival or rebirth, aiming at the beauty and grace of a contemporary era marked by factions and divisions in our contemporary era.

Rogers’s photograph was achieved by immersing her subjects in deep water, and she illuminated her photos with a series of lights. As the characters twist and rotate, the light creates a dreamy painting effect. “Her underwater vision is not an escapist fantasy, but a mirror of our collective state – weird, fluent and search for meaning,” the gallery said.

Hydra Renaissance Run in Shanghai from September 6 to October 26. See more information on the artist’s website and on Instagram.
