Yoshitoshi Kanemaki’s sculptural movement performs kaleidoscope expression in search of “real self”

Yoshitoshi Kanemaki is no stranger to human emotions, giving his playful sculptures once, not once, but several expressions. The Tokyo-based artist is known for his “wood sculptures” sculptures Prism, He continues to explore the nature of distortion, reflection and self-awareness.
Insight PrismThe artist opened this month at the solo exhibition opening in the Fuma Contemporary, combining the artist’s two concepts in his chisel wood work.
“The word ‘insight’ has the meaning of a clear understanding of the essence of things, and ‘Prism’ metaphorically refers to illuminating what is complex.” Through a scattered triangle pattern, he highlights distorted features that refract, separate and reassemble, just like the evolving nature of human consciousness and social interaction.
Insight Prism Marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in two years, showing his largest sculpture to date Prism Series – The same name for the show. Kanemaki studies multiple roles we play in our daily lives, switching between different versions of different versions to deal with different situations or environments. He said:
While this transformation can be seen as a necessary social way to keep life going smoothly, sometimes we lose our vision of “real self.” …My idea for a new sculpture begins with the question: What might be the form of finding a person’s “real self”?
Insight Prism Opened on September 12 and lasts until September 27 in Tokyo. Find more on the artist’s Instagram.
