Tough interview question: What are your weaknesses?

Two questions about building consensus

This is a mirror question from the previous column’s question about your greatest strengths.

While your answer to a question about your strengths may get you labeled as a braggart, people will listen carefully to the answer to this question to learn where you think you are falling short. The wrong answer is a direct answer such as “I don’t have much experience with _____________.” It’s much better to disguise an advantage as a disadvantage.

For example, when asked this question, pause, stop eye contact with the interviewer, and look as if you are sincerely thinking about the question for a minute or two, as if this is the first time you have heard the question.

Then respond, “Hmm. (pause)…I work too hard sometimes. When I get an assignment, I’m constantly thinking about it. I tend to invest a lot of my after-get off work time working on problems and working on projects. Sometimes, after a few months, I find myself getting a little tired and making mistakes. And then what happens is a sign that I need a short break before I can get back to work.”

Answering this way tells them that you work very hard. A nice message to give the interviewer!
