Nowadays, you have to answer questions in two ways – one is a state with an illegal problem, and the other is still legal.

Is it strange to ask about previous salary applications? I’m Jeff Altman, a big hunter. I coach people on workplace issues, which may involve job hunting, hiring, managing and leading more effectively, and being more effective in the overall work environment. I have to answer this question in two ways.
The first is that it is illegal to raise this issue in some parts of the United States. You cannot ask for your current salary. They can ask for the salary they need.
Obviously, you are not in an illegal issue in this country. So, is this very strange? Not surprising. Why do they do this? Simple.
Many organizations are looking for savings, they have information about their preparation for payments, and you don’t. Even if there is a range, you don’t know if they have built a system to try to limit the percentage increase compared to the salary currently offered. So, for example, please understand that a few years ago I had a client trying to hire people with a 4% increase in people.
(1:17 – 1:39)
It didn’t work soon, but they tried to limit it, and the way it worked is that they would raise the offer to be 4%. When rejected, someone will panic. They will meet executives who say we do need this person to do the assignment and we need to approve over 4%.
(1:39 – 3:06)
Note that what they did is create some hedges there, but the goal is to try to get some people up to 4%. They get quite a few pay raises, which limits their financial exposure. For you, this is not for you.
You always want to be in a position where you have information, too. So, if you are filling out your application, avoid questions about your current salary. Answer one about the required salary.
They may come back to you and ask about your current salary. You can answer or not. Understand that if you don’t, they may respond with what many of my clients have done and said, and we need this information.
The interview will end. This is very simple. And, for you, if this is applying for a job and you are not in the interview, you can fill in the field and say we can discuss it in person.
So, it’s a smooth way to deal with it. Answer one about the required compensation and work from there. I’m Jeff Altman.
