Air Canada announces first Airbus A321XLR route

Air Canada will add Spanish beach destination Palma de Mallorca to its map next summer along with the long-term Airbus A321XLRS.

Air Canada said Tuesday that the Star Alliance airline will connect its hub at Montreal-Trudo International Airport (YUL) to Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) starting on June 17, 2026. Flights will travel east on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and west on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The new route is available for additional range of a single AiSle A321XLR. According to Airbus, the plane flies about 5,400 miles, about 800 miles more than the popular A321NEO.

“This revolutionary narrow aircraft unlocks new, exciting global opportunities through its wide-body range and enhanced onboard products,” Air Canada executive vice president and chief commercial officer Mark Galardo said in a statement.

Air Canada will also shift existing non-momentum from YUL to Toulouse-Praguenac Airports (TLS) and Edinburgh Airports (EDI) and transfer the A321XLR to the A321XLR in 2026. Currently, airlines are flying the Yul-TLS with Boeing 787, YUL-EDI and YUL-EDI, as well as YUL-EDI, and YUL-EDI, and YUL-EDI, and the 837 Max Giration Clibious Cirium Shovioum Sange Data, Shop Sange Data, Shot Scheped Data sarvie coirium with Poeing 737 Max.

Air Canada will equip its A321XLR in 14 Lie-flat business class seats in 1-1 layout, with 168 economic seats in 3-3 layout, with a total of 182 seats. Its website shows that Economy Class includes 36 superspace “preferred” seats.

The airline also promises to establish “new design standards for our on-board experience” on its XLRS. It does not provide additional details or renderings for this new standard.

Iberia was the first person to fly the A321XLR in November 2024 and is using the aircraft to expand services to North America. Since then, Aer Lingus and Qantas have shipped the planes with other airlines, including American Airlines and United Airlines, waiting for their airlines.

Air Canada is expected to bring the first of its first A321XLR in the first quarter of 2026. The airline plans to deliver 10 XLR that year.
