JetBlue announces Big Fort Lauderdale extension, new destination

JetBlue has made a huge push in South Florida, and it will add many routes to Lauderdale-Gollywood International Airport (FLL) later this year.

The expansion of the New York-based airline unveiled Wednesday, including returning from several international destinations at the airport – some never served from Fort Lauderdale. Among them: Cali, Colombia, is the brand new destination of JetBlue.

As part of this sunny country expansion, the airline will also bring back FLL flights to Cartagena, Colombia. Aruba; Grand Cayman Islands; and St. Martin. It will also connect FLL travelers to the province of Guanacaste in Costa Rica for the first time. And, JetBlue revealed it will boost its flight products on nine routes across domestic, Mexican, Caribbean and Central American destinations.

This is the latest in a series of expansions announced by Jetblue in recent months in a key area of focus after operators retreated in flights in other parts of the country in 2024.

Even ahead of the announcement Wednesday, the airline’s overall departure rate in the last quarter of 2025 is expected to increase nearly 6% from last year, according to airline analytics company Cirium.

Pursuing spirit?

The place where JetBlue decides to add or enhance its services in its announcement Wednesday should not be overlooked.

JetBlue overlaps with Fort Lauderdale top rival Spirit Airlines, 16 of the 18 new or lift routes announced Wednesday are return or lift routes. It’s the emergence of a mentally erratic financial situation: Florida-based Dania Beach is now involved in Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year and has begun cutting flights from its schedule.

While JetBlue doesn’t mention the spirit of its ever merged with it, the company does point to its increased strength in FLL:
