Job search? Pay attention to your finances

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

One of the most important things you have to do when starting a job search is to check your financial situation. Practical, if you are not working, you may need to check financial considerations. Now for you, they are much more important than moving forward two or three years from now. You have a bill to pay.

I encourage people to sit down and see what they cost in the first place. Go back for two months and look at the checks you wrote, see what you pay from your pocket, and see if there is a way to cut costs. Be proactive. To be honest, if you don’t have financial staying power, you’ll be in the gun in every interview, which is a difficult position to make yourself.

From a cost-cutting point of view, you have to do this urgently before unnecessary stress hits; cut them back Now– This will allow you to really investigate opportunities for yourself. It puts you in a stronger position, not the one you need to.

The formula that is often used is that you need to search for a month for every $10,000 in income. Now, in great times, this number is cut very hugely. So, those who earn $60,000 may not have to worry about six months; more likely six weeks. But in bad times, it may be much longer. It may take six to seven months for those earning $60,000 to find a job. In our recent recession, people often earn more than $150,000 a year to find a job, and they often accept jobs for less.

When you are looking for it, you can take out unemployment insurance for a while. It’s not a lot of money, taxable, and it’s soon to come true. So for the guy who made $150,000, that won’t go any further. I’ve seen a lot of people spend 401k and refinancing or selling homes while looking for work on the sidewalk.

You are always in the best position when you can act early for cost control. Do you really need to buy another pair of $250 sneakers? Do you really need to go out for dinner tonight? This could be to give you more time to find the job you really want, rather than being forced to get something, which could be better spent.

One of my clients, Larry, wanted to be a planning manager, and ultimately, a CIO or CTO. We’ll get together on and off to see where he is on the career highway. I point him to people I have come into contact with whom they can help him coach him or provide him with some guidance or coaching to improve his skills, develop himself and his abilities, and lay a stronger foundation for himself through his experience.

We’ve been following each other for 15 years, and he’s not there yet, but he’s certainly much closer than I did when I saw him 15 years ago.
