A great KLM commercial-grade flight with last minute deal

Flying riders have always been a treat, and I’m particularly excited about the prospect of picking up another KLM Delft House, an iconic benefit for flying long-distance business classes on the Dutch Flag Airlines.
I recently had the opportunity to drive the airline’s Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner in a last minute booking. It turns out that this is a lot of things, especially considering that I had to do a brief Dutch Dutch CityHopper flight in European style business class and visited the KLM Crown Lounge (AMS) at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).
Here is how I book a flight from Slovenia to Amsterdam and then to New York City and how to book it.
How I scored a lot on the Flying Blue Award
The last minute schedule changed my way back from Slovenia to New York when I remembered the beauty of the blue miles of France-klm flying.
While I didn’t find the lowest price for a 60,000-flying blue miles from Ljubljana Airport (LJU) to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, I did find a tax and fee (ouch) from Slovenia to Amsterdam (Klm $346.81).
I put the fee on the France-KLM WorldMastercard® issued by Bank of America, which earns 3 flying blue miles per dollar on purchases from France-KLM.
France – KLM World Mastercard information has been collected independently by Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
I probably should have used it American Express Platinum Card® Earn 5 points per dollar for purchases made directly with airlines (maximum $500,000 in the year of purchases per year).
Either way, I think it’s a big redemption…especially at the last minute, considering the cash price is over $4,250.

Based on TPG’s September 2025 valuation, using my flying blue card for taxes and fees won me 1,040 flights of blue miles worth $13.52.
One great thing about using a flying blue miles is that even if you can’t find the perfect deal for one of the two major hubs of Amsterdam or Paris, adding a connection city can sometimes reduce mileage, which can also be flexible on your dates. This is not possible for everyone, but it is one of the key strategies I use.
Sometimes you will have better luck by adding a second city in Europe to lower prices. This is a good example. I was flying from Paris to New York on September 12th. If I fly from Paris to Paris, the cheapest business grade redemption is about 92,000 miles, but if I start in Bordeaux, I can find the cheapest savings for only 60,000 miles.

Mileage searches on Air France. Flying blue
In my case, I need to get it from Slovenia, so I’m not looking for a direct flight from Amsterdam anyway, but that might help lower my mileage costs and I ended up getting what I thought was a good choice.
Remember that you can transfer points from multiple bank partners to blue, including:
So even if you fly with Air France, KLM or their partners on a regular basis, you have a lot of options to cheer on your account.

Flying European Business Class on KLM CityHopper

I flew from Ljubljana to Amsterdam in KLM CityHopper and took the E195 boat number ph-nxg. I was sitting in the 1C seat in the aisle. Business class has only two seats on each side of the aisle.

For a quick flight of about an hour and 50 minutes, I was surprised to get a meal that included a bottle of fresh juice, water and a boxed lunch. Drinks also flow throughout the flight.

After a quick voyage we arrived at a remote stall in the bustling airport of Amsterdam, from which we arrived at the terminal.
Another fun visit to KLM Crown Lounge

I am a big fan of KLM flagship lounge, the Crown Lounge in Amsterdam. It is marked as the Airline Lounge 52 and you will find it in the non-Schengen area of the airport.
It’s a huge space with the upper and lower levels connected to the boat top and escalators and elevators, but it’s usually crowded for most of the day. Nevertheless, there is always a place to relax.
The entrance and high-rise walls are lined with hundreds of famous Delft houses that are filled with Dutch gin when delivered in flight.

This fun multi-level playground offers a lot of work, see, eat and drink. There is even a nap room and an outdoor terrace.

I must, too try Dealing with one of my repeat Delft homes in Exchange Bar (actually just a few shopping carts near the customer service desk). Because my gin missed it, they wouldn’t let me swap it. To trade it, you need an airtight container that still has gin.

Despite rejecting Delft’s house exchange, I am happy to visit and strongly recommend checking this lounge next time you pass.
How it feels like to fly KLM business class on Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner

I am 5 years old 787-10, with a tail number ph-bki.

The business class on KLM’s 787-10S consists of 38 seats: there are 10 rows of single seats on the window, while in the 9 rows of the two in the middle, there are two seats in the 1-2-1 layout of the reverse Hherringbone. All seats have direct access.

I selected the 3A seat along the left window.

Each seat has a width of 21 inches and can be tilted to a 78-inch Lie-Flat bed. Sadly, there is no separate air nozzle (as is the case with the airline’s 777-300ERS).

The two windows on my seat have electronic window shadows that you can dim with the touch of the button.

The 18-inch entertainment screen is full of a lot of content, including 28 new versions like “Mickey 17”. Wi-Fi is priced at around $26 throughout the flight and works consistently, though not perfect. There is also an interactive mobile image.

The tray table is 18 x 14 inches and there is plenty of room for a laptop or dining tray (but not both).

All business passengers have only two bathrooms, but they keep it clean and never have much waiting. It’s nice to install artificial tulips in vases.

Appetizer options include delicious Thai red curry soup and shrimp steak. For my main course, I chose the chicken slices that were roasted with Indian spices and Punjabi style chickpeas.

The dessert is a pear mousse in a sweet caramel sauce. The food was great and very full.

While the catering service is great, it lasts for over two hours on the plane, which does reduce the time you can take a break or fly on Transatlantic Day.
About an hour before the drop, a front meal was served on a tray that included a smoky salmon and trout Roe Pasta salad, as well as a side of cheese and grilled eggplant ravioli. The dessert is described as a forest fruit orange pastry. This is delicious.

The service throughout the flight was excellent. My flight attendant Howard kept asking me at hand if I needed more and brought me a few cups of coffee in the airline’s fantasy Delftware cup.

Before landing, the flight attendant distributed darkness, milk and white chocolate in the shape of his dear Delft house.

Then there was my favorite part of the flight…I had to choose my Delft house from the tray brought by the flight attendant.

In my case, this is one of the best souvenirs of any trip.
Bottom line

I can’t wait to fly KLM Business Class again. Not only did I add a Delft house to my extensive collection, I also provided excellent service on KLM Dreamliner and had a quick and fast flight.
The last minute redemption took me twice and visited the KLM Crown Lounge in Amsterdam, and only 84,000 flying blue miles made it even better.
If you have blue miles flying in blue, I highly recommend you redeem them on KLM as I cannot highly recommend the airline.
