Featured works by Korean artist Sujin Lee. Lee is currently based in Seoul and has received a BFA and Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kookmin University. Her practice aims to identify and empower herself to forms of negative emotions that arise from personal experiences and the unstable reality in which she lives. Lee’s paintings are often rooted in anxiety and fear, and draw images of emotional resonance from film stills and scenes. Lee strips from their sources, and despite this, Lee’s collection of daily objects and interior spaces still creates a shared sense of uneasiness.
The familiarity of the scene is cleverly unstable. Lee uses this tension to explore the universal and profound personal nature of anxiety. Her work is not a dramatic expression, but a restricted work – presenting high contrast colors, obsessed details, flat work, and a deliberate lack of spatial depth – which makes the audience reflect on their own discomfort and uncertainty. In this way, Lee’s painting evokes a stillness filled with psychological weight, providing a space for contemplation, fear may bring an ambivalent attitude, thus bringing a clear or calmness.
