On the 100th time list, who is the art world figure?

time The Year Time 100 list was released on Friday, which contains the magazine’s picks for the most influential person of the year, divided into six categories: artists, innovators, giants, icons, leaders and pioneers.

Four art world figures are on the list this year: visual artists Yoshitomo Nara and Mickalene Thomas (the latter confusingly classified as “innovators”), architects Annabelle Selldorf and Miranda July, novelists and filmmakers have also dabbled in the performing arts.

timeThe list also includes the company’s CEO, six members of the Trump administration, fashion designers and athletes. The Time 100 website features a celebrity’s articles to everyone and has connections with people involved (e.g., Amy Poehler on Rashida Jones, Gael Garcia Bernal on Diego Luna, Allyson Felix on Serena Williams).

But back to the artist.

Musician Alicia Keys, who is a top collector with her husband Swizz Beats, wrote that Mickalene Thomas is “the mastermind of conveying a poignant message through compelling visuals, and stepping into one of her shows is like entering another.” Actress Molly Ringwald wrote: “July is more than just breaking into the spirit of the zeitgeist; she helped shape it.” Photographer Annie Leibowitz wrote that Selldorf’s re-famous is “reimagining monumental architecture.” Designer Stella McCartney on Nara: Not only is his work childish, naive and direct, but it also conveys the message we need to hear, expressed in a humorous and clear way of digestion.
