Feelings in the new Amex Centurion lounge in Tokyo

American Express has just opened nearly 7,500 square feet of Centurion Lounge at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND). Since the opening is still fresh, I had the opportunity to check it out for myself on a recent trip to Tokyo.

The lounge has been working for the past few years, but it’s worth the wait. It was crowded, but not enough to disappoint me.

Great food and drinks as well as showers and various other amenities.

This is what you expect when you visit.

Fortunately, during my September afternoon stay, I didn’t have to wait to enter. However, I did have to be escorted to one of the few available seats in the lounge that have not been occupied or reserved for American Express holding the invitation centurion card.

Many of the best seats are reserved only for those with black cards.

Information on the Centurion card has been collected independently by Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Eventually, I grabbed a seat surrounded by other passengers at the counter facing the window (no complaints there). As I left the seat, a waiter placed an occupation sign.

Despite the crowd, I love the design of the lounge and it draws inspiration from Japan. Amex calls the color “Japanese blue”.

You will find art throughout the lounge, most of which are created by local artists.

A variety of books and ceramics, including the works of Shimpei Mawatari (located in Porter, Hokkaido Prefecture), also fills the public space.

Guests in the lounge can request access to two showers at the reception desk. Upon request, guests will receive a buzzer that will light up when their shower is ready.

The shower area is chic, mainly in black design, fluffy towels and facilities such as shaving kits, toothbrushes and hair dryers.

There is a shower system with rain shower and wand. Like other centurion lounges, the bathroom has L’Occitane facilities.

I waited 30 minutes before the shower was turned on, so if you want to use a shower, be sure to request it immediately upon check-in.

Finally, there are several “phone rooms” (lounge calls them), but they seem more like the ideal place for a quick nap or meditation. They are available on a first come first served basis and you need to request access from the front desk. Inside, there are adjustable lights and you can choose from a 10-minute “audio relaxation experience” including water, wind and bird singing.

The new lounge really shines in terms of food and drink. American Express hired chef Satoshi Ogino, who was responsible for several Michelin-starred restaurants in Tokyo, including Akasaka Ogino, to help with the menu.

I tried a delicious bowl of ramen and a lot of sticky rice and I appreciated the beautiful speech.

The ramen was especially good – they quickly put it in front of me and I loved the view of the bustling Airport.

There is also a large buffet buffet with Western selections and Japanese dishes.

These include a variety of sushi, pickled seasonal vegetables, fresh vegetables, miso soup, rice, noodles, tempura wagyu beef curry.

In addition to the soda fountain, there is a coffee machine and a faucet serving Japanese beer.

Of course, the bar is the heart of the lounge. The well-dressed bartender mixes almost everything you can imagine on hand.

The extensive wine list includes a Bellenda San Fermo Prosecco, Japan Koshu, Shirayuri L’Orient White Wine and French Chandeau de Champteloup Rose.

I also thank the bar for the choice of a variety of non-alcoholic cocktails, including matcha-style blends and the lounge called L’ora del te. I tried the latter and found a mix of Japanese black tea and cranberry juice.

Bottom line

This new lounge is a knockout round. It is stylish and comfortable and offers excellent food and drinks. The ramen is particularly appreciated.

Although it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles from the larger Japanese Airlines lounge in HND, it’s a great place to relax before a flight…as long as you can find your seat.
