If you think someone should meet you for the first time and provide you with work after 10 or 15 minutes, yes, they are a waste of time.
Information interviews are not a waste of time. They are a way you can learn from what you need to know. For example, you are interested in working in a company. What is really working there? You are interested in a specific career. How does this job really feel? You can talk to people who are already on the scene, talk to people who are already working at the company, learn from them, maybe build relationships with them, where they can help you, maybe help you get interviewed. There is a lot of information to be obtained from information interviews.
