How can you tell if a hiring manager is lying to you? I am Jeff Altman, big game hunter. The answer to this question sounds like crap, but it happens to be true: How do you know a hiring manager is lying to you? How do you know everyone in the organization is lying to you? Their lips are moving.
Let me explain. You can tell that no one has ever explained to you what happened to the last three people who worked on it. The last three people sitting at the desk are doing the work they want you to do. No one talks about the group’s turnover. No one has ever explained the problems in the group that cause people to leave. No one is talking about why the raises are so small. No one will tell you the full story. They all have a happy smile on their face and talk to you about the great opportunity to work with a great team. “Did I mention we’re like family here?”. Yes, in holiday movies, people want to put a gun to their head and shoot them.
So, I would just say, don’t believe what they tell you. Check it yourself. You figure it out yourself. If you have concerns, talk to someone like me so I can help you sort it out. I’m happy to help.
