Joan Weinstein to serve as Getty’s vice president of program planning

Today, Getty named Getty Foundation Director Joan Weinstein as a newly created vice president responsible for Getty-wide programming. Although her appointment is effective immediately, she will continue to serve as a foundation director until a successor is appointed.

In her new role, Weinstein will develop strategy for the agency’s four divisions: museums, research institutes, conservation institutes and foundations. Her efforts will be dedicated to strengthening a range of directives, such as the Getty Museum’s art history scholarship and community partnerships.

“I am honored to take on this new role and look forward to working even more closely with Getty’s talented staff,” Weinstein said in a statement. “At a time when the arts and humanities face daunting new challenges, we have a collective opportunity to demonstrate why they matter, energize scholarship, engage new audiences and better serve our communities.”

Weinstein has served as a director of the Getty Foundation since 2019. During this time, she directed the Getty Foundation’s grant program, which provides funding to museums and researchers leading art history and conservation efforts.

However, she is perhaps best known for co-directing PST ART, a collaborative initiative launched by Getty in 2011 that has grown to include more than 70 cultural organizations across Southern California and is held every five years. The latest edition of Art Meets Science (2024-25) brought together the work of more than 800 artists, hosted exhibitions and projects, and attracted more than 4 million visitors.

Weinstein also oversees the Getty Foundation’s community partnerships, including the recently established Los Angeles Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, which provided more than $16 million in grants to artists and arts workers affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires earlier this year. In 2020, she also spearheaded the creation of the Los Angeles Arts Recovery Fund, which provided more than $36 million in COVID-19 relief to 90 arts nonprofits in Los Angeles County.

“As Getty continues to elevate the work of our four programs, no one can compare with Joan in working within and across departments to achieve our ambitious goals,” Getty President and CEO Katherine E. Fleming said in a statement. “Her deep knowledge of Getty and the areas in which we are active, coupled with her bold leadership and strategic imagination, are expected to take our collective work to the next level.”

Prior to 2019, Weinstein served as senior program officer, deputy director and associate director at the Getty Foundation. Under her direction, the Getty launched the Connecting Art History, Staying Modern and MOSAIKON initiatives.

Over the course of her career, she has served on numerous professional organizations and nonprofit boards, including the Mike Kelly Foundation for the Arts. She was recently inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
