A poignant animation, Sisters explores what it means to free yourself — Colossal

Most of us can imagine a day when we felt trapped by someone or something that we knew wasn’t right for us. Maybe a job requires too much energy, a loved one needs physical and emotional care, or we find ourselves in a situation where we’re stuck and don’t know how to let go. This is the universally relevant premise of the mysterious short film Sisters .
This animated short film was directed by Andrea Szelesová and produced by Pure Shore Films. It follows the mysterious routine of a young woman. We observed it feeding and drinking an unusually large figure, which seemed to grow larger every day, half wedged into the earth, and set in a vast meadow.
As time passes, the interactions become more exhausting, and the immortal figure’s health appears to slowly decline. But what emerges in her place is just as beautiful as the tender care the protagonist has been providing all along, if only she could appreciate the situation.
“What we love about Sisters is that everyone can find their own meaning in it,” Pure Shore said in a review. “In fact, it’s about ‘letting go’ and freeing ourselves from what’s holding us back, whatever that may be.”
