First things to do if you’re fired

First things to do if you’re fired

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

In this video, big game hunter Jeff Altman discusses the first two things you need to do if you get fired.

Avoid job burnout

Let’s talk about that moment when you’re told you’re being fired. Maybe your company is being acquired. Maybe business is just bad. Whatever the case may be, I hope you hear this.

The first thing you want to do is collect everyone’s name, phone number, and email address you can so you can keep in touch if you need a reference.

You need to make sure you have people’s personal information so you can stay in touch with them. That way, like I said, if you need a reference, they can provide it for you.

The next thing you have to do is sit there with your wife, husband, partner, or yourself. If you live alone, figure out what expenses you can cut back on. I really mean it. Do you work to save money?

Pull out your credit card statement. Of course the electricity bill is included. Your water bill…you have all kinds of bills and start checking out where should I be spending my money. For example, if you have a mortgage. OK You have rent. OK We’re not talking about saving money there. There are unnecessary expenses. Almost everyone has one.

Cut these expenses now. Especially if you get a severance package, so smart. Doing this can give you extra staying power in your job search so that even if the search takes longer than you thought, you don’t have to take any steps out of desperation.

You can have a good interview. You can look at the opportunity for what it is, instead of saying, “Oh my gosh! I need a job! I really need a job. Help me! I’m open to anything!”

If you can stay in the job market. If you need an extra 2 months because you’re cutting back on expenses, this will give you a huge advantage in your desperation quota.

Again, get everyone’s personal email address and phone number. Then, from there, figure out where you can cut costs, just in case

Roadblock. will. adversity. Elasticity. determination
