How would you respond if a salary negotiation fails?

Are you convincing yourself that you are unemployed?

How would you respond if a salary negotiation fails? Well, so I’m going to assume there’s an extended offer and you try to bargain and they’re not going to change the offer they gave you. I would think about the types of failed negotiations we are talking about here.

So how you respond is actually quite simple. Thanks. I would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and discuss this opportunity, but I won’t – I will choose not to join. We couldn’t come to a mutual agreement on salary, and, you know, I – I wasn’t going to join. Keep it very simple. No anger, no, you know, criticism. Very simple.

The reason is you never know where you’re going to meet someone again, right? Many of you will have met some of these people because you were early to mid-career professionals. This person is at manager level. They will become more senior. You may encounter them in a variety of places and situations.

So, be kind. Be polite. Be polite. There was no yelling or screaming. No criticism. Just thank them and say, “We were unable to reach an agreement that satisfies me. I’m sorry. I won’t be joining. I wish you all the best. If things change, please contact me. Maybe your budget has changed. Maybe you realize I’m worth more than you initially assessed. But for now, I won’t be joining.” Keep it very simple.
