Don’t be a follower – design your career path

I just submitted a job application. How long should I wait to receive a response? Well, we don’t know if you qualify. OK We don’t know if you qualify. We don’t know if they’ve reviewed 250 resumes and placed 15 people. This is reality. So what I want to encourage you to do is not focus on that. What I want you to do is instead of focusing on waiting for a response, I might say, the next day – not the next day, but the day after that – you send a quick note to the HR person, the hiring manager, whoever you submitted the application to.

By the way, why are you applying for a job? Why don’t you enter through the Internet? Statistics show that the Internet is the primary way people find jobs. Don’t apply for jobs, don’t go to job boards, and don’t apply on LinkedIn. It’s about networking and making introductions to people in recruiting positions.

But now that you’ve done that, not the next day, but the day after that, I would send a quick message to the sender of the resume and say, “You know, I uploaded a resume the day before yesterday. I didn’t hear from you. I know you’re probably busy, but this is my background in relation to the position.” And explain why they should talk to you. Remember, they are busy people. They won’t look at it just because you submitted an application. You may have been filtered out by the applicant tracking system because you were irrelevant to what they were looking for. I once received resumes from Purdue University chicken pullers applying for employment development jobs, and there wasn’t even a hint that they drank java.

So, you know, wait until the next day, not the next day, but the day after that to follow up on your resume. Simply say: “I uploaded my resume two days ago. Didn’t receive your message. I’m sure you’re busy. This is the position I applied for, I just thought my background would suit the position“.
