Tough Interview Questions: Solve It

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
This is from an article on HBR.org. The article is called “7 Rules for Interview Questions That Lead to Great Employees.” Dr. John Sullivan points out in the article that companies make some mistakes when it comes to interviewing and hiring. He encourages people to recognize that the ability to solve this problem is one of the major predictors of success on the job.
So, he asked the question. Describe to them the practical problems they will face on their first day. “Walk me through the main steps I need to take to resolve the issue“.
Before asking this question, prior to the interview, the interviewer takes some time to establish some basic expectations they have in response to the question. So, for example, it’s important to recognize that individuals collect data, consult with teams or clients, identify success metrics, and so on.
Another thing that I tend to think of is that this is a variation of the case study interview question, except you’re faced with a case. So consider asking about the resources you can offer them. How big is the budget? All meta-questions define for yourself the scope to move into this new solution.
For example, as I said in the article, they talk about collecting data, consulting with the team and clients, identifying success metrics, the type of budget, the time frame of the work, who the people I work with are, and whether they tend to be open or closed in their communication style. In order to answer this question well, you need to draw a lot of different things from the case study.
So, I just want to remind you not to forget that these problems exist and start looking for solutions and options. But, from their perspective, the goal is to understand your ideas, how they impact their bottom line, how they can help the department become more efficient.
You can’t do that unless you know better, and that’s what this article is designed to do.
