A dream world appears in Yuichi Hirako’s legendary home space—Colossal

In Yuichi Hirako’s bizarre world, the relationship between humans, nature and the built environment is revealed in vibrant colors and unique proportions. The Tokyo-based artist creates large-scale sculptures, paintings, and installations that explore coexistence, often filled with household objects, food, cats, and figures whose faces are obscured by trees or cartoonish hoods shaped like deer antlers.
originHirako’s large-scale solo exhibition at the Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art invites us into a surreal, almost Alice in Wonderland——Like a realm. From the Salon-like style of numerous paintings and sculptures hung along undulating plywood surfaces, to the monumental quadruplets (canvases made up of four parts), the artist’s work stimulates our perceptions and piques our curiosity.
Anonymous characters often populate Hirako’s otherworldly settings. In one piece, a huge table is covered with a feast filled with fruit, baked goods, and possibly living sea creatures, along with some leisurely cats, stacks of books, and flower arrangements. A huge bookcase is filled with potted plants, books, statues, flowers, etc. – items that in some cases defy the structure of the unit, such as potted trees or shrubs growing behind the bookshelf.
origin Spanning the museum’s indoor galleries, courtyards and plaza, it is part of the Setouchi International Arts Festival. The exhibition will last until November 9 in Okayama City. Find more information on the artist’s website and Instagram.
