Is one-click application a good thing for you?

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
More and more websites offer “one-click apply” features that make it easy to apply for a job, but is this useful to you?
Trick Questions Recruiters Always Ask and Send Messages to
Nowadays, more and more websites provide one-click application functions, allowing you to apply for jobs easily. But should you really use it? Is One-Click Apply a useful tool for job seekers? Let me explain what happens with a one-click app. There are two ways to provide it. One is you join a job site like Indeed and they say, “Hey, one-click apply. You uploaded your resume to us and we’ll forward it to the employer.” Here’s what happens behind the scenes. They send the same generic resume to every job. You know, a broken watch, right? Twice a day. This resume may or may not actually prove to be a good fit for you, and you haven’t done anything to customize your resume, which could be a problem for you and cost you an opportunity. Also, when they send the resume, they don’t have your address there. They have the city and state, but not the zip code. Now, you might be saying, “What’s the biggest problem?” That’s the question.
They submit your resume for you. In fact, they often upload it into the database of the recipient’s applicant tracking system. Without a zip code, no one will ever find you. ah? Yes. No one will find you. Let me give you a perspective. You apply for my position and, you know, I’m hiring all over the country and you don’t have your zip code on your resume. How do I find you there? Well, you search by skill. No, I search based on skills and location. Without a zip code, I don’t have your location. So why can’t you look me up by city? Well, that’s not the case. These databases are all set up to search within a certain radius of a specific location defined by a zip code. The result is that you are lost forever. Oh, and I’ve submitted it to a local recruiter. Well, they do the same thing. I’ll use New York as an example. I have a job in Manhattan and am looking for people within a 50 mile radius of Manhattan.
38 Deadly Interview Mistakes to Avoid
The database is searchable by zip code. How will they find you? Well, they would search everything, but they didn’t. They will search by zip code. So, you lose them. They won’t find you. This is another way some of these sites are. They take your LinkedIn profile and submit the job. Now, look at your LinkedIn profile, it’s thinner than your resume, it’s definitely not customized to the job, and the result is that you’re basically dumping spam on people. For most job seekers, one-click application is just a convenience but not really effective. This won’t get you more interviews. It will give you more resume submissions and make you feel like you’re doing something, but it won’t give you the results you want. Therefore, I don’t recommend using the one-click apply, but instead jot down the job, submit a customized resume for it, and go from there. This will be more effective.
