Pop-up letters in Kelli Anderson’s playful book set a ‘dynamic alphabet’ — Colossal

As a communications designer, Kelli Anderson began her career in information design. “The purpose of data visualization is to bring facts from the realm of abstraction and numbers into the realm of perception so you can see them,” she said in a video on Kickstarter. “I thought, why stop there? What if you could feel and experience these facts too?”
Last year, Anderson launched a remarkable, five-year project called Alphabet in motion: How letters form shapesan ABC pop-up book about typography. She spent thousands of hours researching design archives and crafting dynamic and three-dimensional letters to show how typeface styles evolved over the times.
“If you look closely at the letters, you can see the secret history of the world – from the Bronze Age to the Information Age,” Anderson said. “But this history is difficult to follow as many methods, tools and machines are now obsolete. Alphabet in motion Use tactile, interactive features to help illustrate how letters change as technology changes and aesthetic moods change. “
The project consists of two conjoined, detachable books. The pop-up section includes an interactive seven-segment display cover that changes from A to Z, 17 removable paper elements and hands-on activities. The accompanying 128-page section contains an in-depth article on the history and concept of each pop-up, as well as 300 color images from the history of type design.
Anderson’s book was originally funded on Kickstarter and is now being distributed more widely. Protect your copy in the mega store. Follow her work on Instagram and you might also like another of her projects, This book is a camera.
