Renée Condo’s vibrant beaded pieces convey Mi’gmaq’s spirit of empathy — Colossal

Throughout her practice, Renee Condo draws on the philosophical principles of her Mi’gmaq heritage. The Montreal-based artist works with wooden beads, which he sands, paints with bold acrylic paints and then embeds into vibrant works depicting juicy fruit, raindrops and brilliant golden suns.
Apartment interested Mutuor spirituality, and what she calls spiritual knowledge, are actions that arise from empathy and love. Through sculptural pieces that emphasize interconnectedness and flow, the artist draws on Aboriginal creative stories and myths, arguing that her beadwork is a reimagining of various traditions.
Condo often engages with the relationship between components and compositions, emphasizing the way in which individual works can appear abstract without a wider context. “The bead as a fundamental entity, as an infinite potential, can appear divided, whole, and partial,” she said, “but it is both complete and all-encompassing, holding the secrets of the world and the essence of reality.”
This fall, Condo’s work will be on display at GAVLAK, where she is also exhibiting. You can find more of her practice on Instagram.
