Job security is a myth. No need to wait for layoff notices! Protect your income now. Learn the 3 key steps today’s working professionals must take to become market ready.

Who is responsible for your career?

Stop ignoring the job market. Just because you are currently employed does not mean you are safe. Here are three things you can do to prepare for the market, just in case. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me worldwide to provide job search guidance and career advice without a bachelor’s degree because I make the process of finding and succeeding in a job easier.

So, first of all, take a few minutes, like five minutes, every Friday to check out job sites. Don’t apply, just look at salaries, skills, titles in your field so you’re truly market ready and valuable, just in case.

Second, your secret weapon will be informational interviews, reaching out to people in positions or companies you admire. The goal is to understand industry trends and build a non-emergency network. When you contact them, use this specific phrase: “You know, I’m happy with where I am, but I’d like to stay up to date on what’s going on at your company. I promise I won’t approach you for a job because I’m not interested in a job right now. I just want to know what’s going on with your company.” This will surprise them because they’re used to being approached for jobs, and they’ll be more willing to talk to you.

Finally, keep your LinkedIn profile up to date. It’s like having an emergency escape plan for yourself. Do this every few months so we can contact you about opportunities. Also, in case you know what’s going on, your resume and LinkedIn profile can be updated more easily in case you need to. Include what you’ve been working on recently, your big wins, and your successes. You should be able to spend about 30 minutes applying for a job, rather than spending hours agonizing over what to add to your LinkedIn profile or resume.

So I would just say, don’t wait for layoffs. Don’t wait to talk to your manager and say something is going to happen here that I can’t protect you from. Be proactive so you can be prepared.
