1 question every C-level candidate should ask
Securing a board seat requires patience and perseverance. You’ll need to continually improve your skills, expand your network, and stay up to date on the latest industry trends to increase your chances of being invited to a boardroom. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People don’t hire me for job search advice and coaching around the world, because I make things easier for people.
I want to be clear, we’re not talking about you being invited to join the Google board, the Facebook board, Apple, or any major American company. We’re talking about you getting on the local board. Here are a few things you need to do.
The first, of course, is leveraging your network. Start by reaching out to your existing professional network, including mentors, colleagues, and industry leaders, to let them know you are interested in joining the board and ask them if they have any insights or connections that could help you in your search.
Networking events, conferences, and industry associations are also great places to meet individuals who may be relevant for board positions. Remember, part of what you are doing is expanding your network and building relationships with people who may influence your choices.
The second is to work with an executive search firm for this type of position. These executive search firms often help companies identify potential board members. Contact reputable companies in your industry and submit your resume highlighting your relevant expertise. Of course, we’re not talking about you becoming a business analyst. But we’re talking about you highlighting your expertise that makes you a good fit for the board, your accomplishments, and your interest in a board role. Building relationships with these companies will help open doors to different opportunities.
The third is to participate in board-focused events.
Many organizations host events centered on board governance and leadership. Therefore, attending meetings will give you insight into the board recruitment process and allow you to network with individuals who already serve on the board or who are looking for new members.
Expand your network. Joining relevant organizations is my fourth point. Consider joining a professional or trade association related to the industry in which you are interested in serving on a board. These platforms provide networking opportunities, educational resources, and access to individuals who may be knowledgeable about board vacancies.
Remember, I’m going to repeat what I said at the beginning. Securing a board position takes patience, time and perseverance. Continuously improve your skills, expand your network, and stay up to date on the latest industry trends to increase your chances of being invited to a boardroom.
