Facts about networking and finding a job.
The best way to Google yourself
I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m the head coach at JobSearch.Community. The question I get is, how important is networking when looking for a new job? Let me tell you the truth. You decide how important it is.
When you look at the statistics on job openings, you’ll notice something interesting. First, I have to say that these initial numbers are not accurate, for reasons I will lay out for you. First is the statistic that 6% of jobs, no, 3% of jobs are filled as a result of responding to an ad.
Then there are 20% of positions that are filled by recruiters. Now, I see the statistics on both of these are a little high and a little low. My opinion is that recruiters sometimes advertise.
So I decided to combine the two numbers and say, basically, nearly 30% of positions are filled through recruitment and advertising. The balance is filled due to networking. Let’s break it down further.
It’s not just that 70% of jobs are filled online. 70% of the 70% are filled through results introduced to people you didn’t know at the beginning of your search. 49%, almost 50% are filled this way.
With networking filling nearly three-quarters of all jobs, do you have any questions about its importance? So when you only work with recruiters, when you only respond to job ads, you’re taking the least effective route to finding a job. Now, I’m not saying that building a network is easy. For most people, this is like having a root canal without anesthesia.
So I know how unpleasant this is for most of you. But a lot of life involves facing things we don’t feel comfortable with and doing them better. In the beginning, you’re probably going to be terrible.
But it’s a skill you need to develop throughout your career to ensure that people approach you for opportunities. Networking is critical not only in this job search, but in every job search you do in the future. Because if you network correctly, and you don’t just do it when you’re looking for a job, if you do it consistently, then you build your network, jobs will come to you, people will get to know you, and they’ll be happy to hear from you.
Always stay connected. I want to repeat it. Always stay connected.
