Stop Asking to Meet for Coffee: How to Build Trust and Get Recommendations

Okay, let’s talk about something that we’ve all been through or, you know, will definitely go through. Job search was rejected. Very smelly.

But what if that door slams shut and that’s not the end? What if this is actually the beginning of your biggest victory? Today we’re going to break down how to turn disappointment into your secret weapon. So you did everything right. You polished that resume.

You successfully completed the interview. You can almost taste the office coffee. Then you will receive the email.

Say no to your dream job. coin. That’s a punch, right? It can really get you into trouble.

The big question is, what happens now? Well, the first thing to say is that this is very important. This isn’t just your problem. Getting rejected in your job search doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

It’s just part of the game. This is absolutely inevitable. I guarantee this happens to everyone from interns all the way up to the CEO.

Look, it’s 100% acceptable to feel bad. The source material is very clear on this. This is a huge disappointment.

You may feel completely shocked or dismayed, and even start to question yourself. These feelings are absolutely correct. The trick is not to pretend you don’t feel them, but to decide how long they will last.

This is what we call rejecting fear. You know that feeling? It’s one of those heavy gray clouds where you just replay every answer in the interview and get frustrated with the whole thing. It’s certainly a good place to land for a minute, but it’s a really dangerous place to set up camp.

Because that’s the reality, being stuck in this fear, as real as it feels, is actively working against your primary goals. Every second you spend saying “no” is a moment you are not moving toward the “yes” that awaits you. It just kills all your motivation.

So you’re basically at a fork in the road. You have two clear paths. The first path is to get stuck, feel bad, and let your progress grind to a halt.

Or the second path, you decide to bounce back. You decide to learn from the lesson and experience and use this rejection as rocket fuel for your next attempt. This is a conscious choice you have to make.

This is the moment. This is the pivot. It’s an intentional mental shift you make, away from the feeling of rejection and toward the lessons underlying it.

Making that move, well, it changed everything. So how to achieve this fulcrum? It’s simple, really. You change the questions you ask yourself.

Stop asking, why didn’t they choose me? You start asking, well, what can this teach me? Just like that, rejection stops being a judgment against you and becomes a reality. data. Just pure, useful data.

Now, your first instinct is probably to email them and ask for feedback, right? Well, there’s a bit of a curveball here. The advice here is, don’t. You probably won’t get the full, honest story anyway.

The real move of power is to look within, because you are that person. You can probably identify your own mistakes better than anyone else. Here’s a super simple four-step playbook to do just that.

Stop applying, start planting: The executive job paradox

Step 1: Acknowledge the feeling. Let yourself be disappointed a little. Step 2. Analysis.

Ask yourself honestly, what did I do wrong? Step 3. Determine the specific moment. Is this an ambiguous question? A weak example? Finally, step 4: Commit. Promise yourself not to make the same mistake next time.

Now, when you start using this process, it will do more than just help you overcome one rejection. It actually unlocks this huge big-picture insight that can completely change the way you approach your entire job search. This was the aha moment.

The skills needed to find a job are completely different from the skills needed to get a job. You might be a great engineer, a creative marketer, etc. It’s an amazing skill set.

But interviewing, telling your own story, presenting yourself, and, yes, dealing with rejection. This is another set of skills you have to learn from scratch. that’s right.

The unknown reason why you didn’t get the job

2. You master two different skills at the same time. You are an expert in your field, but you are also a student learning how to get hired. Just realize that this is an absolute game changer as it takes the personal sting out of it.

This means that when you fail at an interview, you don’t fail. You are learning. You’re taking a course in how to master the truly difficult skill of job hunting.

Every “no” is just a practice round. This is what the gym represents. That’s how you get stronger for the next game.

So I’m going to leave this question to you to think about. You were rejected last time. For a job, a project, anything.

Forget the sting for a moment. Think about data. What is the most important lesson that experience is trying to teach you right now? Because the answer to that question, well, that’s the key to unlocking your next “yes.”
