Things that instantly ruin a first impression.

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
We form our first impression of someone within the first seven seconds of meeting them, and there are certainly certain factors that can instantly determine its success or failure. Are you ready to find out what you should and shouldn’t do to make a great first impression? Then read on…
1. The handshake is not strong enough
A tenuous handshake can be a real first impression killer. Research shows that people who don’t shake their hands firmly enough are immediately perceived as shy, anxious, uninterested, or even downright incompetent. To make a good impression, remember to hold the other person’s hand firmly, but not for more than two seconds.
2. Wrong hand position
When sitting in front of a group of people, pay attention to where your hands are placed. Avoid putting them in your pocket as this can give the impression that you are hiding something. Also, be aware of cultural differences when placing your hands on the table. While in the Western world it is acceptable to place your hands gently on the table, in Japan and India this is considered rude.
3. Chewing gum
Chewing gum can be very annoying and distracting, especially in formal settings or when meeting for the first time. It makes you look immature, self-centered, and a little cheesy. However, in casual situations, chewing gum can make you appear more friendly and approachable.
4. Avoid eye contact
Maintaining eye contact during a conversation is important because it is seen as a sign of confidence, focus, intelligence, and trustworthiness. On the other hand, avoiding eye contact can make you appear less genuine, more anxious, and even unattractive. Remember to make eye contact with each other from time to time, especially when meeting each other for the first time.
5. Play with your hair
Playing with your hair during a conversation can make you look unsure, anxious, and uncomfortable. If repeated too much, it can even be considered a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Try to break this habit, especially in official settings.
6. Choosing the wrong conversation topic
Avoid discussing taboo topics such as health problems, money, religion, political or personal problems and complaints. Instead, pay attention to your conversation partner and be a good listener.
7. Invading someone’s personal space
When meeting someone for the first time, please respect personal space by staying at least four feet away. Standing too close may be seen as aggressive, while standing too far away may make you appear uninterested. Find a happy medium and stick to it.
8. Create distracting noise
Tapping your feet, fingers, or pen on the table may indicate nervousness, irritation, or impatience. Additionally, while relieving stress, cracking your knuckles is also considered one of the most annoying sounds. Try to control these habits, especially during important meetings or presentations.
9. Check your phone often
Checking your phone during a conversation, even just to check the time, is extremely rude. It gives the impression that you are bored and have better things to do. Keep your phone out of sight to ensure quality conversations and engagement.
10. Forgetting other people’s names
Forgetting someone’s name can be embarrassing. To avoid this, make a habit of repeating their name immediately after being introduced. Using a bad memory as an excuse won’t cut it. If you do forget, stay calm and avoid using phrases that require saying the person’s name.
11. Being late
Being late for meetings or appointments shows that you are unreliable and disorganized. This can give the impression that you don’t value other people’s time. Try to be on time and manage your time effectively.
12. Wrong attire
People judge others based on appearance within the first seven seconds. Choose conservative clothing, dress neatly, and avoid wearing heavy perfume or makeup. Looking neat and well put together will leave a positive impression.
in conclusion
Making a good first impression is crucial as it can significantly impact how others view you. Avoiding these twelve things that can ruin a first impression will help you make a positive and lasting impact on the people you meet.
