Did you know that the job title listed on your resume and LinkedIn profile may be the very reason you were screened out for being “too experienced” (a common form of age discrimination)?
How Anne got noticed by recruiters—and how you can too
Can you tell us what I think about ageism and what we can do to help our careers if an employer may think we are too old or experienced for the job we are interviewing for? Now, the first thing I want to say is that many of you are too experienced for the jobs they are interviewing for. That’s the way it is. You will want too much money, or they will think you want too much money, which will make them hesitant to talk to you.
After all, if they see SVP on your resume and they’re looking for a director, they’ll know you’re making much more than they’re willing to pay. So this has nothing to do with ageism. That’s because the experience is so rich.
Now, due to ageism, please delete some of the content from your LinkedIn profile that predates the turn of the century. You can do this. If you open the record under Experience, open the company under Experience, and scroll down, you can delete the position. There’s a lot you can cut out, but focus on the last 10 years of your life and make sure your resume shows how you’d be a good fit for the position they’re looking for.
They don’t care what you did before 911. They don’t care about that, and the chances of it being relevant to what they’re looking for are very slim. But the idea is always to connect what you do with what they’re looking for. Make it easy for them. Don’t make them have to think to figure out if you’re qualified, because they can’t. This is reality. They won’t think about it. They’ll just say, “Doesn’t look like a particularly experienced person, so I’ll pass.” I’m sorry, “This person looks too experienced. We’ll take it because the job is probably $40,000 less than the job she or he is looking for.” Make it easy.
