How I got 45% back on my stay at the Hyatt Regency Barcelona

Even in high-spending destinations like Barcelona, you don’t always have to redeem your points to enjoy affordable luxury accommodation.

I haven’t felt much of a price hit over the past few years from flights or car rentals – it feels like the biggest increase has been in hotel prices. As a result, I now spend more time squeezing value out of accommodation than redeeming flights.

With some planning and some clever promotion stacking (using multiple offers that can all be applied to the same stay), I recently converted a $650 two-night cash stay into over $290 worth of points, a 45% return.

Here’s how I combine multiple World of Hyatt offers with the right credit card to make my money go further—and how you can do the same.

Math: How I Earn 25 Cents per $1

This month, I stayed at Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s Antiga Casa Buenavista in Barcelona, where hotel prices can easily top $300 a night. Normally I would redeem points for a stay like this, but the unique combination of stackable promotions made paying cash a better deal.

Here’s the calculation for my $650 stay:

That adds up to 25.5 points per dollar, for a total of 16,575 points (13,975 Hyatt points plus 2,600 Chase Ultimate Rewards points).

Based on TPG’s November 2025 valuations (1.7 cents for Hyatt points and 2.05 cents for Chase Ultimate Rewards points), it’s worth $291, giving me a 45% return on my booking.

These points will go a long way. In March of this year, when I was visiting friends and family in Australia, I planned to use 12,000 Hyatt points to enjoy a free night at The StandardX in Melbourne. This hotel is one of only two StandardX hotels currently open, which will help me earn the Brand Explorer Award (a free night after staying at five different Hyatt brands).

How to stack World of Hyatt promotions

Hyatt regularly runs global and regional promotions, which may be stacked if terms permit. The key is to read the fine print and time your registration carefully.

For this stay, I combined two offers:

  • Stay two nights or more and enjoy a targeted triple point promotion, valid for 90 days from the date of registration
  • Double points offer for hotels in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, terms and conditions clearly state that it can be combined with other promotions

Since I had other Hyatt stays planned in the near future, I waited until about a week before my trip to Barcelona to sign up for the Three Points deal. This delays the start of my 90-day earning window, allowing me to earn bonus points on upcoming bookings as well.

You can find current and targeted offers online in the My Offers section of your World of Hyatt account or in the app. Sign-up is not automatic, so it’s worth checking regularly and opting in when new offers come up.

Which credit card do I use for my Hyatt stay?

Earlier this year, I used my World of Hyatt Credit Card (see Rates and Fees) is used to pay for Hyatt stays and quarterly estimated taxes to meet the $15,000 spending threshold. This is your best option to get a Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate and 6 Elite Night Points.

Since becoming a globalist in July I have turned to my Chase Sapphire Reserveearn 4 Ultimate Rewards points for every $1 spent on hotel bookings directly. This keeps my income high while also giving me flexibility. I can transfer these points at a 1:1 ratio to Hyatt or other valuable Ultimate Rewards partners such as Air Canada Aeroplan or Air France-KLM Flying Blue.

If you’re after elite stays or annual free night certificates, stick with the Hyatt Card. If you already have a membership and prefer more flexible points, Sapphire Reserve is the smarter choice.

The value of globalist status

Globalist status brings you greater rewards. A 30% base point bonus increases your earnings, while perks like free breakfast, room upgrades and late checkout make your stay even more valuable.

However, not all Hyatt hotels have the full suite of in-property elite benefits. For example, Mr. and Mrs. Smith hotels don’t offer free breakfast or most common Globalist perks, even if they participate in World of Hyatt. You can still earn points and Elite Stay points on qualifying stays, but these properties are best viewed as points-earning opportunities rather than opportunities to truly showcase Hyatt’s elite benefits.

bottom line

By stacking promotions, taking advantage of elite bonuses, and using the right card, I turned an expensive Barcelona stay into a 45% points return. By paying cash for a $650 stay, I earned over 16,000 points worth over $290, effectively cutting my actual cost nearly in half.

Before your next Hyatt reservation, check the promotions page, time your sign-ups strategically, and make sure you’re using a card that maximizes your earnings. Even in the most expensive cities, with a little homework you can get your money’s worth.
