Tomislav Topić meticulously layered hundreds of panels into a prismatic grid installation – huge

Tomislav Topić’s undulating, site-specific installation consists of dozens of painted mesh fabric panels, transforming the airy space into an immersive experience. Carefully suspended from the ceiling or between outdoor structures, the panels are layered on top of each other, interacting with the sunlight and each other to create vibrant gradients.
One of Topic’s recent interventions is, echo universecomposed of 57 different colors on 451 panels, stretches nearly 100 feet long and about 25 feet wide. It is currently installed in a spacious former church at Les 3 CHA in Château-Giron, France, where the work floats like waves across the open space.
Other recent works include “Nexus Lucis,” which was installed above the altar of a large church in Gisors, France, earlier this year. This fall, an outdoor installation called “Afterburn” floats above Intendencia Street in downtown Pensacola, Florida.
Geometry, tone and light interact to create a prismatic interplay. “Each color, each layer, each perspective echoes one another, like lines of a poem extending into one another, or like sound waves traveling through space and refracting in the air,” Topic said in a statement. Independently hovering yet precisely arranged, the perceptual effects continually change as one moves around the work. From one vantage point, the installation may appear more opaque, but from another angle, its faceted and translucent nature is revealed.
Topić carefully considered the nature of space, how we interact within it, and how changes in light throughout the day can change the feel of a space. “It was important to me to create a piece that introduced intentional contrast but still integrated with the space,” he says. “I love this symbiosis; to me it’s crucial – especially in a place that’s over 800 years old.”
