Spicy Tuna Salad It’s a staple for lunch at our house. We use it for everything from quick sandwiches to sushi bowls to salads. It has the same ingredients as sushi-style spicy tuna, but is made from affordable canned tuna.

Our other favorite tuna recipes include Tuna Egg Salad and Avocado Tuna Salad.

A few weeks ago, I was craving sushi but with no cars in sight, I was forced to improvise and this Spicy Tuna Salad was born. We’ve been eating it almost every day since. This is probably my favorite way to eat canned tuna.

Like any good spicy tuna, the dressing for this salad starts with two very important ingredients – spicy sriracha and creamy mayonnaise to fight off all the spice.

To keep it light and healthy, I used a combination of light mayo and Greek yogurt and it worked really well. Then for added flavor I added some rice vinegar, soy sauce and scallions.

Trust me, if you love tuna and spice, you’ll want to make this immediately. It’s also delicious as a spicy tuna rice bowl.

Tips for Making Spicy Tuna Salad

Follow these tips to make the perfect tuna salad every time.

  • Add sesame oil: If you want the tuna flavor to be a little stronger, consider adding a little sesame oil to the mixture. I like to use toasted sesame oil, a little goes a long way. It will add some nutty, earthy flavor to the tuna salad.
  • To use avocado: If you don’t like mayonnaise, avocado is a great substitute. Just mash it up and use it in place of mayonnaise. You can also keep the mayonnaise and add some chopped avocado to the mixture.
  • Sesame and furikake: If you’ve ever had tuna poke, one of my favorite things to use on it is Furikake, which is a Japanese seasoning blend that contains sesame seeds, nori, salt, sugar, and a special seasoning. It’s delicious and a great addition to spicy tuna salad. Sesame seeds also add crunch.
  • Use different proteins: If canned tuna isn’t your thing, you can always use a different protein. This salad goes well with chicken, salmon, cooked shrimp, tofu, chickpeas, and even hard-boiled eggs.

How long does tuna salad last in the refrigerator?

Generally speaking, tuna salad is best eaten 2-3 days after it is made.

If you think you need to keep it longer, I recommend just making the dressing.

The dressing will keep in the refrigerator for about a week, just add the tuna and vegetables when ready.

What’s the best tuna for tuna salad?

There are so many different options for canned tuna that it can be hard to know which one to choose.

Here’s a general overview of the most common canned tuna found in grocery stores.

  • Water tuna and oil tuna: First, tuna is usually packaged in oil or water. Water tuna contains fewer calories and fat than oil tuna, so for most people, this is their first choice. But some people prefer the taste of tuna in oil. If you choose tuna in oil, be sure to choose tuna packaged in a heart-healthy oil, such as olive oil. Another consideration is that water-packed tuna is generally higher in Omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Albacore, yellowfin tuna, bonito: Most markets will offer albacore and yellowfin tuna options, with bonito also becoming increasingly popular. Albacore and yellowfin tuna are white tuna varieties that have the mildest flavor. However, these tuna also have the highest levels of mercury. Bonito is usually bonito in light tuna or chunks of light tuna. This tuna is darker, has a stronger flavor, and contains less mercury than white tuna. The fourth option is Tongol, which is similar to bonito. It’s also brown and contains less mercury than white tuna.
  • Entities and blocks: Most tuna comes in solid or chunky form. Solid tuna is a large piece of tuna meat from the loin, while chunky tuna is smaller pieces that come off the loin and are packed together. Tuna chunks are cheaper than solid tuna.

How to make spicy tuna salad without mayonnaise?

To make spicy tuna salad without mayonnaise, you have a few options.

  • Avocado puree is my favorite option and adds creaminess, healthy fats, and delicious flavor to the tuna.
  • Another good option is greek yogurt. Choose the full-fat variety for less flavor and more creaminess.
  • You can also use Sour cream, vegan mayonnaise, even hummus.
