They can’t fill that many positions

EP 3099 Happy Anniversary to No BS Job Advice Radio. We launched on this day in 2010! That’s why we’re the veterans of the job search podcast.

Today’s show is about one of those things recruiters know that you don’t

Executive Job Search Gold Mine

If you’re looking for a job right now, you know how hard it can be. I mean, you scroll endlessly through job boards, tweak your resume for the hundredth time, and then send your application down what feels like a black hole. This is so frustrating. But what if a recruiter knows a critical piece of inside information that could completely change your approach and, more importantly, your results? Well, let’s uncover what this is.

Sound familiar? The data on this is already clear. It has become the default behavior that most of us job seekers spend 60% of their time doing one thing, applying for jobs online. You know, that’s what we think we should do. But to be honest, does working so hard for so long really pay off? For many people, the answer is no. They did not receive a call back. They will not be interviewed. This is an extremely common story. If that’s you, you’re not alone. The reasons may actually surprise you.

Okay, this is the number that changes the entire game. 30%. That’s it. At best, only 30% of positions are filled through online advertising and recruiters. Let’s understand this. It feels like this number should be much higher, right? So, let’s actually break it down. When we look at the data, online job ads and what we spend all our time doing, they only account for about 22% of actual hiring and recruiters only account for 8%. Add these up, and that leaves 70% of jobs filled through other methods. That huge piece of pie. This is where the real opportunities hide. When you put them together like this, the problem becomes crystal clear. We put a lot of effort into dedicating 60% of our valuable time to a strategy, but at best we could fill less than 30% of the jobs. There is a huge mismatch between where our energy goes and where the results actually come from.

So, if spending all day every day on job boards isn’t the panacea we thought it was, what is? What happened to the other 70%? Where are those jobs? here it is. That’s the secret. For many of us, this is the one thing recruiters know that feels like a blind spot. Network work. No, this isn’t just some corporate buzzword. This is the most effective way to find your next job. Hey, let’s demystify this whole cyber thing, because it doesn’t have to be this big, scary, intimidating monster. At its core, it’s actually very simple. It’s just about talking to people you already know to learn about people they know that you don’t know yet. That’s all. This is just the beginning of the conversation.

So what all this really points to is the need for a strategic shift. It’s about consciously shifting your energy away from obviously low-gain activities, posting your resume online, and then refocusing it on high-gain activities, just by talking to people. So, what does this actually look like in practice? Well, it’s a very simple three-step path forward. First, make a conscious decision to take some time away from those large-scale applications. Second, focus your newfound time on talking to people you already know. Third, and this is key, ask people they know who can help you. Look, it’s one thing to know all this, but it’s not going to change anything until you actually take action. So, the question to really get you started is this. Who is the first person you can talk to today?
