Nothing to hide: Yu’s Jinyoung’s sculpture

“My creation represents those who choose to live besides others, as if they are invisible or non-existent creatures. Instead of adapting to human society, they enter their own personal space to avoid interruptions from others.”

Jinyoung’s vision, information and skills stride forward in a family in 2008. Jinyoung presents a solo exhibition at the Union Gallery in London, using the microcosm of a family unit to represent the entire society, carefully examining the various ways people use the concept of “home” to hide, similar to where they escape. The show is as much as concealment and has something to do with revelation.

Jinyoung explained further. A disguised family begins with a situation where transparent people just want to hide and have no choice but to say hello to the guests. These characters try to look ordinary like other happy families. They decorate, dressed in beautiful clothes and stayed side by side with guests to say hello. At first glance, you can’t seem to avoid everyone, but you can’t avoid everyone’s atmosphere. Conflicts arising from lack of communication in family and society. ”

My creation represents those who choose to live besides others, as if they were invisible or non-existent creatures.

In essence, the concept of invisibility reveals many contradictions. An invisible person is still without others, and the body itself is an obstacle to putting others in trouble. Invisibility also invites individuals to have different freedoms and powers, because if anonymity is guaranteed, what would you not do? However, advantages are also disadvantages. Those who have no companionship or comfort, no friends or enemies who have rendered undiscoverable. Invisibility is an equal freedom and trap, which ultimately guarantees this question. Is invisibility a blessing or a curse?

Jinyoung recognizes paradoxes and contradictions, often speaking in character when trying to describe the inner turmoil of her characters.

“A transparent body means a perfect shield that can hide itself anywhere, and the crying face indicates a warning: ‘Don’t walk towards me!’ My characters defend themselves through crying faces, and if others say something to comfort others, it’s hard for them to cry, but people really can’t come to mine on their faces. It’s a sign of warning, and people who refuse to try to help, not fully understand their situation.”

So, how do you understand all this? Would it be better to yell, continue or hide in the corner, pretend to be a smile? Is it better to wear your heart on your sleeve than to wear a mask? Like any intellectual debate about identity, compliance, or individualism, it is difficult to make shock-proof arguments one way or another. All I know is that when I look at an invisible person in Yu, they look familiar to me. I see. I understand because I know themselves.

Jinyoung’s work is for all of us loneliness, for those outside the world. Those who find comfort in their own private spheres desire to show their true selves: lies and fraudulent selves. As amazing as her work and as dedicated as her artist, but the real goal of Jinyoung’s invisible human being is to instinctively pursue the sincere individuals that are deep within each of us.

When I asked Jinyng how she expressed her personality, the answer was firm and pure. “I expressed my thoughts and opinions at work. I felt that was enough. I like the ordinary. No matter where I go or meet, I just want to look ordinary. I want to be confused with others, neither gorgeous nor too beautiful nor too shabby. I believe that if a person thinks, acts and expresses his or her own life, then his or her own life, prefers his or her life, and enjoys a variety of things,
