Tailoring doesn’t always refer to your wardrobe

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
He had been a friend and client of mine for years and had been hearing me talk about this for at least a decade, but he still made a mistake that has caused more failed resume submissions than anything else.
For my headhunter readers, do you often receive a resume that leaves you scratching your head and wondering what the person who sent it was thinking? This happens to me over a hundred times a day.
Almost every resume I receive does not show the skills required to do the job, even though I clearly stated in the ad that resumes should only be sent in Word if you have the required skills.
If you think I have time to call everyone and ask them if they have experience suitable for the position they forward their resume to, you are wrong. I don’t. If I called everyone who emailed, waited for them to come back, and qualified them to fit into the missing parts, I would never have time to market to help people find the jobs I found them.
So here’s a simple solution – don’t flip the same resume over to a job ad like a burger at a fast food restaurant. Tailor your resume to the position.
Pretend a six-year-old could read it. At that age would your son or daughter be able to tell that you are qualified for the job?
Yes, that means you’re going to have 50 or 100 versions of your resume, and you need to keep track of which version was sent to whom.
so what?
A broken watch goes right twice a day, and a mediocre resume will get you a few interviews.
You’ll get more and better interviews if you tailor your resume to a specific job description instead of sending out the same resume over and over again.
