A hotel stay reminded me what not to do in order to impress in a job interview.

whenever i want to do something

On a recent trip north that my wife and I stopped at a hotel for the night midway through our trip, we were disgusted by what we found in the hotel room. It also applies to your job search process. I am Jeff Altman, big game hunter. Across the globe, people hire me to provide job coaching and career advice without a bachelor’s degree because I make the process of finding and succeeding in a job easier.

What turns us off? The room smelled of cleaning products. The room looked like it had just been cleaned and had a disgusting chemical smell. Now, I’m not usually as sensitive about these things as my wife is, but man, this is terrible. We checked into another room in the same hotel. Much better. There was still cigarette smoke inside.

That’s what I’m going to put together for you, those of you who wear perfume or cologne. You wonder if this is too strong for the interviewer. So you might think it’s pleasant and they should get over it, but sometimes you can’t. It’s just that the scent is too strong. Suffice it to say, rather than risk rejecting someone for the wrong reasons and being memorable, skip the cologne, skip the perfume during the interview and avoid rejection. Because people are afraid that you’ll smell like that when they work with you. That’s true for the interview team, but it’s true for HR people, hiring managers, and everyone along the way. Be aware that other people may react differently than you do.

Now I still have a lot to help you job search community. Come to the scene. I have free content there. Let me comment on your resume and LinkedIn profile. You can order one from me on the homepage and become an Insider at any level and you’ll have access to all my content there. Therefore, I can help you in many different ways, including coaching.

If they interview a lot of people, should you apply?
