I have 20 years of industrial experience and 14 years of consulting experience. I want to show that I’m open to both.

So if I understand you correctly, you want to have a resume that shows you are open to industry and consulting. You are an experienced person. You’ve been in industry for 20 years and the last 14 in consulting, I would have two different resumes.

The first is a tilt toward consulting. The second is a more functional resume about your background. Again, I’m going to pause and ask, is the work you do in industry related to the work you do in consulting? You know, the industry has changed a lot in the past 14 years.

Therefore, the relevance of your previous job may not be as important as your current job. You can use your cover letter or cover email to show that you are open to seeking a position in the industry and are leaving consulting because you want to establish roots in an organization and be more successful. So, my concern is that your industry experience is in antiquities.

When I saw 14 years, that was 2010. Barack Obama was there. That was a long time ago.

This is his first term. We were in the midst of the Great Recession. Times have changed a lot, haven’t they? I doubt the importance of your job, he told me he is an AVP with 34 years experience.

No, don’t write about more than 30 years of experience because you’ll instantly establish yourself as an old guy. Trust me, I’m an old guy. I’m much older than you.

I know the old guys. Functionally describe yourself. Not doing 34 years of experience.

I hired over 40 people, but I left a long time ago. So, I’m just going to simply say that people hire me to provide no-nonsense job coaching and career advice across the globe because they make the process of finding a job and being successful that much easier. Have your own brand statement.

Here’s an example of an elevator pitch I came up with using the elevator pitch video from JobSearch.community. Go out there, process it, and come up with your own version of a similar statement that reflects your experience. What do people hire you for? Think about it. That’s all that matters to them.

It’s not like you have 30 years of experience. I’m sure you’ve seen people with 30 years of experience. That’s literally 30 times a year.
