Most people have the wrong idea about what a background check really is.

Don’t include references on your resume

Most companies do background checks, but not in the way you think. They don’t really want to validate your abilities. Your interviews and work samples really do that for them. They do look for red flags.

The questions they ask reference, and yes, they may throw up smokescreen questions about how the person does their job or whether they are good at their job. What they really want to know is whether you will hire them again and that their next manager should know how to work with them effectively.
