Finding a job is hard enough, but it can be even worse when you live alone. Here are 10 things you can do to connect with people, especially now!
if you don’t show confidence
If you live alone, maybe you’re single, divorced, widowed, whatever the case, finding a job is going to be a lot harder because you don’t have anyone in the immediate area to talk to. So I want to give you some advice on how to connect with people when you’re looking for a job, because finding a job is hard in any situation, but it’s even harder emotionally when you’re on your own. I am Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me worldwide to provide job search coaching and career advice without a bachelor’s degree because I make the process of finding and succeeding in a job easier. I have a lot of useful information to help you job search community. Some of them are free. I charge a small fee to review resumes. Also, if you become an insider, I will coach you. I coach with you at all but the lower levels and provide you with all of my video content, books, and guides as part of the program. If the price is cheaper, you can ask me questions. I will reply soon.
So, here are some things you can do to increase your engagement and stay connected with people, so you’re not just sitting alone in your apartment or home without talking to anyone. Okay, so the first thing is when you go out, say hello. Say hello to people. Put a smile on your face and make eye contact. I know that when I got divorced and moved into an apartment building in Greenwich Village, I would run into people in the elevator, waiting for the elevator. I’ll say hello to them. It helped me connect with my neighbors and you can do the same thing in any situation, whether you’re in a store, whether you’re waiting online somewhere, whatever it is. This is a way you can make small talk with people that will serve you well over time.
You can also start a hobby at home that you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the time, no matter what it is. I don’t care if it’s painting, playing guitar, taking online classes, whatever it is, do something. You know, it’s not like you have to do something big. This can be a small project, such as cleaning out a closet. Maybe this is a big project for you. Go back to school. Attend class. Local community colleges, trade schools, there are a lot of different places you can take classes. If you’re older, some states also offer free tuition for seniors. Maybe you like to dance, like some of my friends. You can go out and dance. Pickleball is all the rage these days. Learn to play pickleball. There are many places across the country where you can do this. Take an online exercise class. I started doing this with my wife. Very interesting. I felt much better after the class. People started to notice that I was a regular, they said hello to me and, of course, I responded. It was an interesting experience for me.
Why Most Job Seekers Fail (The Secret of Resilience)
You can volunteer with various organizations. There will be people out there willing to accept you as a volunteer. I know, I was involved with a men’s group years ago, and every month we served meals at a mission on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and we were able to connect with each other and easily connect with the people who came to eat by doing that. It feels good to help others.
Join a support group. Now it’s not necessarily a work support group, although that’s a great place to be. But it’s a great place to do things, but there are other types of support. Maybe you need to lose weight, so joining a support group about your weight can help. Whatever it is, maybe it has something to do with quitting smoking. Find a support group and take some action. Maybe you’re religious and you can attend worship services as part of a connection time, whether it’s a mosque, a synagogue, a church, a meditation center, wherever it is, getting into a physical space with others instead of just being at home.
Finally, do something different. A wonderful analogy I heard in instructor training was how people get out of ruts, they used the example of ruts in the road, people keep driving over the same space and the ruts get deeper and deeper, and their advice was very simple: turn the wheel a little. Just a little spin of the wheel and you can get out of trouble. You are in the same situation. You can do something different by spinning your wheels a little to get out of the rut. Maybe go out at a different time of day so you have time to get in your morning exercise class, whatever it is. Do something slightly different so you’re not alone, you’re not stuck, you’re not alone and you’re connected to other people.
